The Jones Family Emigrate to New Zealand

Carol's (of nzolivers) Jones family lived in Kenwyn, Cornwall, England.

On the on 31st of May 1872, Thomas and Hannah (nee Sammels) Jones - along with young children Elizabeth, Emma, Hannah, and Thomas - left Gravesend, near London, on the clipper ship, "City of Auckland".

The family arrived in Auckland on 3 September 1872. Apart from a series of strong south-easterly winds, which were unfavourable and accompanied by a heavy head swell there was mostly pleasant weather throughout the voyage.

DNA Test

A few years ago Carol of nzolivers.com undertook a genetic test through AncestryDNA. A DNA test can determine a person's ancestry or biological relationship between people. Carol's results have identified thousands of matches. Already communications has resulted from these connections.

The original results  for 'Ethnicity Estimate':

  • 51% Great Britain (Northern England, Southern Enland)
  • 35% Ireland/Scotland/Wales
  • 7% Europe West (Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein)
  • 4% Scandinavia (Primarily located in: Sweden, Norway, Denmark)
In June 2019, Ancestry added new regions to improve the precision of their results for DNA tests and that ethnicity estimate was as follows:
  • 54%  Ireland and Scotland (North East Scotland & the Northern Isles including Banff & Buchan, Ulster, Ireland especially South Down & North Louth)
  • 46%  England, Wales & Northwestern Europe (Devon & Cornwall, England, especially Devon)
More recently, as at July 2024, the ethnicity estimate on Ancestry was further refined and now shows:
  • 38% Scotland
  • 31% Ireland
  • 25% England & Northwestern Europe
  • 4% Germanic Europe
  • 2% Cornwall
