Misc. Notes
Name and dates of birth and death from Muriel Leo’s (nee Oliver, 1917-1998) Family Tree. Lived Tauranga.
A newspaper clipping from the Bay of Plenty Mirror 9 October 1973 in Muriel’s collection reads, “Mr [Harold] Oliver himself arrived at the Bethlehem block with his parents in 1909. Each member of the family was given their own piece to develop, an elder brother milking 30 cows on the land where Mr Athelston now lives”.
“Harold Oliver himself lived in one of two cottages already on the block up where Farrelly’s place is now. That piece of ground was allotted to me he recalls, and I ran a dairy herd. It was a hard life but a happy one”.
Places of birth and death, date and place of burial, from Cynthia Glover (nee Coleman), whose great-great-grandfather was William Samuel Allen b.1843. (William's sister, Martha Allen, married Charles Oliver, youngest son of James and Ruth Oliver).
Cynthia quotes from notes taken during a visit to Harold in 1974 by a library archivist, “Harold went away to the war [WWI] for two years and on his return took up farming again, cropping maize and grazing dairy cows. there was a small orchard. mostly pears and peaches for home use but the excess fruit was sold.
Harold is descendant from nobility on his mother's side (Martha nee Allen). Martha's paternal grandfather was Charles Stanhope, 3rd Earl Stanhope, descendant from a long line of families including Stanhope/de Ifferley/de Colleville/Crispin and Pitt.
Harold's x22 great-grandfather was William Crispin I, alias "Guillaume de Colleville", who was a companion of William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. I recommend reading Cynthia Glover’s (nee Coleman) excellent book, “The Allen Family” (first published in 2005), complete with much excellent information and photos.
Copies of “The Allen Family” are held at:
- The Puke Ariki Museum-Library in New Plymouth, New Zealand

In a telephone call on the 27 August 2021, Cynthia Glover advised Brian of nzolivers that copies for purchase, directly from her, are no longer available. There will not be another print run. Please see previous paragraph where copies are lodged.
