Ernest was working at the old New Plymouth airport and used to ride his horse to work daily from his home at Brixton near Waitara, Taranaki. While crossing the Waiongona river bridge his horse reared in fright from a car and he was thrown from his horse suffering serious head injuries. His injuries necessitated him being transferred to Porirua Hospital where he died some months later.
