Harriet Cripps’ was born on the isolated Auckland Islands, 465 kilometres south of Bluff, New Zealand.

Harriet’s great-great granddaughter, Shona Riddell of Wellington, wrote a book in 2018 about New Zealand's subantarctic islands and their dramatic human history including that of her Cripps ancestors. The book was called:
