“Mary was born in July 1865 in Kennington, which is on the eastern outskirts of Invercargill. Her parents were John Ebenezer Black and Margaret Waite. Her mother had been a servant in the household of James Black, and married one of James Black's sons, John Ebenezer Black before emigrating to New Zealand. Mary was born in New Zealand.
Mary married John William Sycamore, a farmer, about 1884.
