Obituary from Velma in same email dated 22 March 2021:
Hawera Star, 19 November 1925
Another gap has been made in the now fast-diminishing band of early pioneers of this district by the death of Mr. John Pepperell, of Hurworth, which took place on Tuesday at the age of 81 years, says the Taranaki Herald. The deceased was the eldest son of the late Mr John Pepperell, of Bell Block. He was born in the district, but spent the years between I848 and 1853 in Melbourne. On returning to New Zealand with his parents he worked on his father’s farm at Bell Block. He was a well-developed youth, and at the age of about 16, when the Maori War broke out, he joined the mounted troops and took part in all the operations until the conclusion of the war.
The late Mr. Pepperell was a fine type of settler and took a keen interest in the affairs of the districts in which he lived. He was for many years a member of the school committee and chairman of the Hurworth Dairy Company.
He is survived by his widow and a family of two sons and three daughters. The sons are Messrs Frank Pepperell, of Eltham, and Ernest Pepperell, of Hurworth. The daughters are Mrs. E. Allen, of Waitara, Mrs. H. Wells, of Pukearuhe, and Mrs. F. Harrison, of Carrington Road.
