Information from Cynthia Glover (nee Coleman), whose great-great-grandfather was William Samuel Allen b.1843. (William's sister, Martha Allen, married Charles Oliver, youngest son of James and Ruth Oliver).

Michael writes was Sheriff of Nottingham and Derbyshire. And, “Sir Thomas Stanhope increased his wealth by purchasing the manors of Whatton, Bingham, and Toveton, and, significantly, by marrying the heiress Margaret Porte, 14/10/1542-1597, daughter of Sir John Porte of Etwall and Cubely, one of the Justices of the King's Bench, and Dorothy Montgomery, second of three daughters and coheirs of Sir John Montgomery, obit 7/4/1513, of Cubely in Derbyshire”.
Michael notes that Sir Thomas’ wife was aged 14 at the time of marriage, and nited this was not uncommon at that time.

From Wikipedia, Sir Thomas Stanhope (1540 – 3 August 1596) was the son and heir of Sir Michael Stanhope, and a Member of Parliament for Nottinghamshire. Stanhope was twelve years old when his father was executed in 1552. He lived at Shelford Priory Nottinghamshire. In 1562 he was appointed Sheriff of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire and in 1574 and 1587 High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire. In 1586 and 1593 he was elected knight of the shire (MP) for Nottinghamshire. In 1596 he died in debt, partly caused by the cost of rebuilding Shelford Priory.
