Torfinn probably lived in several places, but lastly at Birsay on northwest Mainland , where he also built a church and had a bishop's seat.
Torfinn was the son of Earl Sigurd Lodvesson Digre and a daughter of the Scottish king Malcolm II. He was married to Ingebjørg Finnsdatter , daughter of Finn Arnesson . Together with Ingebjørg, he had his sons Pål and Erlend , and he was grandfather of Saint Magnus Orknøyjarl and Håkon Pålsson .
