John was apprenticed to his step-brother William Devis, watchmaker and then later took over the business.

JOHN DEVIS
watchmaker, Brother to William DEVIS late of Fleet Street, decesfed [3 August 1763], who has for many years managed his business, is now entered into Business for himself in Glocefter Street near Bloomfoury, where he hopes his late Brother’s Cuftomers will favour him with their commands.

Yefterday afternoon as a man was plaiftering the fide of a window at Mr Devis’s watchmaker in the Strand, he fell down and was killed on the fpot.
