Misc. Notes
Originally thought to be father of Elizabeth Ann Langman with name, date and place of birth and death, date and place of marriage, from Amy Utting’s family tree advised by email on 4 October 2018. Amy is the x3 great granddaughter of Francis Oliver b 1840.

Graeme Kenyon in an email dated 15 September 2020 questioned that this Richard, and his wife Mary, were the parents of Elizabeth Ann Langman whose second marriage was to Francis Oliver b.1840. Graeme writes that:
1. The obituary for Richard Langman makes no mention of a daughter Elizabeth Ann Langman
2. The Langmans came to New Zealand on the William Bryan in 1842 and the passenger list for the ‘Blenheim’ shows Richard and Mary Langman came with three sons - Richard, Thomas and John. Elizabeth Ann Langman who was born in Cornwall in 1841, is not on the list.

(Graeme Kenyon’s great grandfather was James George Kenyon b.1861 whose second wife was Ada Oliver b.1864, daughter of Samuel Oliver b.1833. Also, James’ sister, Florence Kenyon, married James William Oliver, son of Charles Oliver b.1843).

The obituary reads:
THE LATE MR RICHARD LANGMAN
We have lost another of the pioneers of this district in the person of Mr Richard Langman, who died early on Monday morning, after an illness which had confined him to his residence for some weeks. Mr Langman was born in Cornwall in 1810, and came to Taranaki in the barque Blenheim, arriving at New Plymouth on November 7, 1842, with his wife and family. He, for some time after his arrival, followed agricultural pursuits, but the Government requiring some one to carry the mail from New Plymouth to Wanganui, he undertook the difficult task, performing the journey on foot. On one occasion, at the beginning of 1847, when the natives had broken out in Wanganui, and murdered a family named Gilfillian, he was entrusted with a large sum in gold to take to an Imperial officer in command in that town ; and the duty was fraught with great danger, as he had to pass through country occupied by Maoris, who were hostile to the Europeans. The journey for a long distance had to be done along the sandy beach, and when he first undertook the duty of mail carrier the remains of the wreck of the Harriet, on the beach named after her, were still to be seen. During the war he encountered many hardships. He was successful in several land speculations, and built the Red House Hotel, which he carried on for some years. He was married three times, and by his first wife had six children, the sons being Mr Thomas Langman, Mr Richard Langman, Mr Elisha Langman, and Mr John Langman, the latter of whom died some years ago. He had two daughters, Mrs M. Clow and Miss Langman, who lived with her father and his wife. The deceased was very much respected, and for kindly acts performed in an unostentatious way will long be remembered by not a few. The funeral will take place tomorrow (Wednesday).

In a further quest to determine if this Richard and wife Mary were the parents of Elizabeth Ann Langman, Brian ordered Elizabeth’s death certificate. This was received on 7 October 2020. This showed her parent’s as:
Father: Thomas Longman
Mother: Elizabeth Langman (nee Rowe)
This now confirms that Elizabeth Ann Langman’s parents are not Richard and Mary (nee Rogers) Langman as originally thought.

And, in an email from Graeme Kenyon dated 7 October 2020, this Richard is now confirmed as an uncle to Elizabeth Ann Langman.

Date and place of death confirmed, date and place of burial, Cornwall confirmed as place of birth, been in New Zealand 50 years. Children living at time of death - Three sons age 53, 51, 33 years and two females age 43 and 41 years, from Graeme Kenyon in an email dated 12 October 2020 - sourced from the Death Certificate for this Richard Langman.

Looking at being in New Zealand 50 years, this would place him immigrating circa 1842 which matches exactly for the ‘Blenheim’ that arrived in New Plymouth on 19 November 1842.
