Donald Roy Overbaugh (Don) passed suddenly at home January 29th in Oak View, CA at the age of 81.
Don is survived by his wife of 50 years Joyce; his son Don, wife Tisha and their two children, Devon and Dylann (Ventura, CA); and his daughter Cindy Secor, husband Jason and their two children, Madison and Jayden (Ventura, CA). Don is also survived by his two daughters from a previous marriage; Lorrie Terrana, husband Jack (Lake Elizabeth, CA); and Linda Guzman, husband Danny and their three children, Daniel, Jenifer, and Michelle and also six great-grandchildren (Bullhead City, AZ).
Don is also survived by his brother Bob Overbaugh (Boerne, TX); his sister Carol Stimson, husband Chris (Surprise, AZ); his brother-in-law Walton Cook (Boise, ID); his brother/sister-in-law Candy and Floyd Freudenthal (Medford OR); his sister-in-law Marilyn Chase (Newhall CA); his brother/sister-in-law Mary and Jay McCubbins (Sunrise Beach, MO); and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Vernon and Marie Overbaugh, his in-laws Hazel and Floyd Freudenthal, his sister Doris Toth, his sister-in-law Pat Overbaugh, his brother-in-law Robert Chase, and his sister-in-law Judith Cook.
Don was born on January 17, 1935 in Catskill, New York to Vernon and Marie Overbaugh. He married Joyce in 1965. Don began working for the U.S. Forest Service as a firefighter. After living at several remote ranger stations in the Sequoia and Angeles National Forests, Don moved his family to Oak View, CA where he continued his work with the Forest Service until he retired after 43 years from the Los Padres National Forest supervisor's office in Goleta, CA as Chief Communications Manager.
After his time with the Forest Service, Don worked in disaster support leveraging his many decades of experience. Through this work he was involved with the cleanup for Hurricanes Ike/Gustav/Katrina and recovery efforts for the Space Shuttle Columbia. Don was a lover of animals. He personally cared for many including those of neighbors and family. He also contributed to area animal shelters/rescues and the Humane Society. Don will also be remembered for his witty and sometimes dry sense of humor. He never failed to get his family to smile.
Services are scheduled for 10:30 am February 20th at St. Thomas Aquinas Church (185 St. Thomas Dr., Ojai, CA), with a reception to follow at the church hall. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Don's life. Don's final place of rest will be the Overbaugh-Everett Cemetery in Catskill, New York. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his name to Humane Society of Ventura County, P.O. Box 297 Ojai, CA 93024 and Alzheimer's Association of Ventura County, 145 Hodencamp Rd #205 Thousand Oaks, CA 91360. The family would like to thank Dr. Fred Fauvre and his staff for their care of Don.
