Name of “John French” from letter dated 31 July (but no year but probably circa 1980) to Muriel Leo (nee Oliver) from Eleanor’s x2 great-granddaughter, Jean Andrews (nee Smith), and added here in May 2020.

In the above letter, Jean writes, “My maiden name was Smith:
Daughter of Dulcie, nee Surrey
Daughter of Eleanor, nee Turner
Daughter of Eleanor, nee French
Daughter of John French, passenger on the ‘William Bryan’, another of the first ships along with the Amelia Thompson”.

Brian of nzolivers notes that the ‘William Bryan’ sailed from Plymouth, England on the 19th November 1840 and arrived at New Plymouth, New Zealand on the 30th March 1841. The passenger list shows steerage passengers:
