Bernard Warren Goodman, 88, of Belpre passed away on April 20, 2021, at his home after a courageous 6 year battle with dementia.
Bernard was born April 15, 1933 in Marietta, OH and was the son of the late Lawrence Oliver and Alice Ann Chichester Goodman.
Bernard carried newspapers in Marietta from 8 years old until he was out of school providing much needed income for his family.
While in high school, Bernard ran track for Marietta High school winning many medals and Letters. One of his best experiences was meeting Olympian track runner Jesse Owens. They spoke about running and shook hands. Dad won his track meet that day with Mr. Owens' words in his heart.
When school was over, he and some of his friends joined the Navy. Bernard served, during the Korean War, on the USS Boxer CV21 ship for 4 years from 1951-1955 where he learned a trade that he used until retirement.
He worked 7 years for Union Carbide and then retired after 31 years with Borg Warner and GE.
Bernard was a member of the Fort Boreman Rifle Club, the Wolf Creek Cap Snappers and was a lifetime member of the NRA. He loved target shooting and enjoyed making his own bullets known by others as Bernie's Beautiful Bullets.
Bernard also enjoyed motorcycle racing on flat track, hill climbs and enduros.
Bernard is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Jackie M. Goodman; son Ray Goodman (Susan) of Marietta; daughter Geri Goodman of FL; grandchildren Jessica White (Josh), Joshua Goodman and Cameron Williams; great grandchildren Gianna, Isabella, Christian, Mia, Adalyn and Brinsley.
In addition to his parents, Bernard was preceded in death by his brothers Samuel, Frederick and Raymond Goodman.
Funeral services will be Saturday, April 24, 2021, 1:00 pm at the Leavitt Funeral Home Belpre, with Rev. Paul McGuire, officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Baptist Cemetery in Lubeck. Visitation will be Saturday 11:00 am - 1:00 pm.
