Cause of death from Coroners Inquest summarised in The Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser, Tuesday 14 February 1860 found in November 2023:
CORONERS INQUEST - An inquest was held on Saturday, at the Maitland Hospital, before Michael McCartney, Esq., District Coroner, touching the death of Mrs Jane Carter, aged 22, then and there lying dead. It appeared, from tho evidence of deceased's mother and husband, that she had been of unsound mind from her Infancy, and was subject to epileptic fits. In one of those fits, in November last, during the absence of her husband, she got to the fire and was severely burned about the left leg and arm. On a former occasion, also, she had been similarly burned. She was immediately attended by Dr Wilton, who ordered her to be conveyed to Maitland Hospital, where she remained till she died. The medical testimony went to show that death resulted from the Injuries she had sustained by burning aggravate by previous burns. The Jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony, but censured the husband for want of care and attention to his deceased wife
