When Johann August Friedrich was born on 14 December 1822, in Sachen, Neidenburg, East Prussia, Prussia, Germany, his father, Gottfried Friedrich, was 32 and his mother, Dorothea Elisabetta Lehmass, was 28. He married Maria Louisa Meyer on 10 February 1850, in Tucheim, Jerichow II, Province of Saxony, Prussia, Germany. They were the parents of at least 6 sons and 4 daughters. He died on 14 September 1885, in Wellington, New Zealand, at the age of 62, and was buried in Mount View Cemetery, Marton, Rangitikei, New Zealand.
