Inquest article from the Ohinemuri Gazette newspaper of 3 July 1908 found on the Papers Past website in June 2025:
A CHILD'S DEATH.
INQUEST AT KOMATA.
An inquest was held by Mr W. Forrest (Coroner) at Komata on Wednesday afternoon regarding the death of the child Cecil Albert Wharton, who died suddenly on Tuesday afternoon.
Henry Wharton, father of.the deceased child, stated that the child was ten months old. Witness first found that he was ailing about a month ago, when he began to get teeth. Witness got some medicine from a chemist, and it seemed to do him good, as it eased him. On Tuesday witness was at work, and when he came home at half-past four p.m. he found the child had died. The child had not been worse for the last few days, as far as witness could see. The child was taking his food as usual. He had not conversed with any of his neighbours about, the child's sickness. He did not think the child was dangerously ill or he would have called in a doctor.
Mrs Wharton, mother of the child, stated that the child had been restless ! lately, but not more than usual for children teething. About five minutes to four on Tuesday witness was getting the tea ready, and she gave the child to her daughter to nurse. She spoke to the child, but he took no notice. Witness then sent her daughter for Mrs McGee, who said when she came that it was too late to do anything, as the child was just breathing his last. The child did not screech or make any noise, nor did witness hear any rattle. The child had been fed on condensed milk and Neave's food. Witness would not give him cow's milk, as there was nothing but bush fed cow's milk to be had.
Dr Smith, who made a post mortem examination, deposed that the body was fairly well nourished, and the organs healthy except the liver and lungs. The liver was larger than usual, and both lungs were congested in the lower lobes. He attributed death, to failure of the heart's action consequent on congestion of the lungs. Had the child been seen by a doctor last Saturday he should have been able to diagnose the complaint, and there would have been an average chance of recovery. Witness would say that the congestion had existed between one and two weeks.
The jury found that the cause of death was heart failure consequent on congestion of the lungs.
