In a visit to Peter in Christchurch by Brian of
nzolivers.com in May 2017 Peter said he did not see his wider family much, being brought up on a farm at Otorohanga. They never visited family, nor had family visit the farm. There was one exception. The Buckland family lived on a farm next door. (Peter’s mother’s sister, Nita Clark, married Alfred Buckland). Peter used to play a lot with his cousin, John Buckland, who was only six months older than him. Peter does remember as a nine-year old boy coming down to Wellington for the 1940 New Zealand Centennial Exhibition [8 November 1939 to 4 May 1940]. However, Peter does not recall seeing any family.
For his secondary education, Peter attended boarding school at St Peters in Cambridge, and was out of touch with any family relationships. Peter said that St Peters was a relatively new school then and was very forward in its philosophy - there was no corporal punishment. Silence/no talking was the punishment. Peter enjoyed the school.
Although Peter was quite knowledgeable on his father’s Horneman side, he did not have too much knowledge of his mother’s Clark family. It is interesting to note that Peter is also descendant from the Hornemans on his mother’s side. Peter’s paternal grandfather was Morton Brandt Reid Horneman. Morton’s sister was Emma Caroline Horneman, who married Henry Gosling Clark, his mother’s grandfather.
Peter said he also did not know anything about the Dodson family. Peter’s maternal grandmother, Katie Dodson, died eleven years before Peter was born. [Katie’s father was a Member of Parliament for three terms (nine years) and was a Brewer in Blenheim]. Peter suggested alcohol was a taboo subject in those days and therefore not talked about at home.
During the Second World War, Peter’s father, Jack Horneman, was second in command of the whole Otorohanga area with the local home guard. Because of this, he was away from the farm a lot and the boys had to pull their weight and work the farm. Peter’s oldest brother, Alan, was nine years older and went overseas to war.
The Hornemans moved off the farm in 1964. The Buckland’s moved about the same time.
