Name from hand-drawn tree given to Brian Oliver by Peter Horneman, son of Jack Horneman here and also great-grandson of Emma Caroline Horneman b. 1836, through his mother, Cora.

HORNEMAN, Lieutenant Jack who was wounded on August 8, is a son of Mr M Horneman of Northcote [Auckland, NZ]. He was born in Hawera and was educated in the primary schools at Mangaioki, Taranaki, and at Hamilton, while he later attended the Hamilton High School and the Auckland Technical School.[AWN 26.08.1915]

Jack Horneman, was second in command of the whole Otorohanga area with the local home guard. Because of this, he was away from the farm a lot and the boys had to pull their weight and work the farm. Peter’s oldest brother, Alan, was nine years older and went overseas to war.
