Name, date and country of birth, date of death from Muriel Leo’s (nee Oliver, 1917-1998) Family Tree.

Graeme Kenyon, whose great grandfather was James George Kenyon b.1861 (whose second wife was Ada Oliver b.1864, daughter of Samuel Oliver b.1833) quotes from the Hawera and Normanby Star of 23 June 1921, “When the Maori war broke out the family were compelled to return to town [from Carrington Road just beyond the present junction with Tarahua Road] and later on, their homestead was burned by the Maoris. Miss Oliver was one of the woman who declined to go to Nelson when most of the women were sent there for safety.

Brian (of nzolivers.com) comments Matilda would of been about 23 years of age when war broke out. Brian believes Matilda married in 1869.

From Brian (of nzolivers.com) trip to New Plymouth February 2009, the Headstone at Te Henui Cemetery, New Plymouth, New Zealand (next to James and Ruth’s grave):

Result from marriage search on New Zealand BDM website in October 2018:
1873/9106. Bride: Matilda Rubeus Oliver. Groom: William Henson Word
[Note the spelling errors in Robins and Wood]

Year of marriage not 1869, rather full date of marriage of 5 October 1873 from further searching in October 2018 on BDM Search by incrementally changing the date range for the marriage. Note - William Henson Wood would of been about 10 years of age at the time of marriage if he was really born in 1863? Must of been born earlier.

Photos in an email dated 6 December 2021 from the Wood sisters of a porcelain ornament that was bought over by Matilda Oliver on the Amelia Thompson. One of the sisters writes, “in actual fact I remember as child being fascinated by this ornament especially as our father, when he was little, put lots of pins inside the little windows. I used to like to rattle the ornament to hear the pins”!

Wood sisters shared other family photos.
