Results from BDM for this year of death provides a date of 31 Aug 1954:
1954/26006. Turner, William John, died age 54Y. Date of death

However, this would place his birth at year 1900. A search here provides a date of birth at 2 April 1900:
1900/10188. William John. Mother: Emma. Father: William Albert.

Problem is this places William at 19 years younger than wife Emma.

Sarah Ferguson (nee Churton) claims date of birth at 21 March 1879 and date of death at 31 January 1956.

A search on BDM here confirms Sarah Ferguson’s dates as follows:
Birth: 21 March 1879, 1879/3841. Turner, William John . Mother: Elizabeth. Father: Henry
Death: 31 January 1956, 1956/19560. Turner, William John, died age 76Y

This William John Turner would be 2 years older than Emma, a more likely senario.

Update: Correct birth and death dates:
Brian Oliver of nzolivers confirms that the dates of birth (21 March 1879) and death (31 January 1956) for William are correct. This has been confirmed in October 2018 by Waikumete Cemetery (Auckland) records of 1956 cremations, page 308, that reads:
17394 TURNER William John, 21 Larchwood Avenue, Westmere, Retired Plumber, aged 76 years, died 31.1.1956, cremated 2.2.1956, scattered 3.2.1956
