John died age 13 on 11 April 1861. Neville Richards, grandson of Ivy Grace Oliver says cause of death was during diptheria epidemic.

Diptheria also confirmed by Graeme Kenyon, whose great grandfather was James George Kenyon b.1861 whose second wife was Ada Oliver b.1864, daughter of Samuel Oliver b.1833. Graeme also references Taranaki Herald 13 April 1861.
