Misc. Notes
Original entry here was from Muriel Leo’s (nee Oliver, 1917-1998) Family Tree. Date of birth is quoted as ca 1825 and date of death as ca 1919.
Elizabeth arrived in New Plymouth on 19 November 1842 on board the ship “Blenheim” with her parents Robert and Emma Baker.
Rachel Frances Oliver born 31 August 1940 says Elizabeth married Samuel at the age of 19. Muriels year of birth fits this. However, information from Clarence (Clarry) George Oliver b. 09 Sep 1928, says her date of birth was 20 July 1829. If this was the case, Elizabeth this does not would have been only 15 years of age? Both Rachel and Clarry agree with the date of marriage. Clarry’s information says Elizabeth died 22 April 1923.
However, information from "Family Tree: Robert and Emma Baker" lodged at Puke Ariki Museum, New Plymouth, New Zealand, says Elizabeth’s birth date is 20 July 1827. It is this date now used here. Elizabeth would have been 17 years of age when she married Samuel Oliver.
Rachel goes on to say, “Elizabeth re-married ten years after Samuel died to Theophilus Farcey. Women in those days virtually had to re-marry unless they had a very wealthy husband to leave them well provided for, or had children who were able to provide for them. No widows pensions in those days. Elizabeth outlived Theophilus and died aged 94 at Warea, Taranaki [New Zealand].
Marriage certificate to Theophilus from Joy (Margaret Joy) Nixon - nee Oliver, has his last name spelt as “Forcey” and place of marriage as, “Dwelling House of Samuel Baker”. Elizabeth’s maiden name was “Baker”. Her first husband’s name was “Samuel”. Brian Oliver of
nzolivers.com is unsure whether the married took place at Elizabeth’s and deceased husband’s home? She had been a widow for 9 years.
This marriage certificate with Theophilus says her place of birth was Andover, Hampshire, England.
Elizabeth’s Death Certificate, from Joy (Margaret Joy) Nixon - nee Oliver, has cause of death as, “Senile Arterio Sclerosis (a chronic condition characterised by thickening and hardening of the arteries and the build-up of plaque on the arterial walls. Arteriosclerosis can slow or impair blood circulation) and Cerebral Haemorrhage - 14 days”.
