Misc. Notes
Mentioned in 1851 Census Return for Northcott hamlet, Devon, England. Living at Boyton Mill, aged 76, farmer of 35 acres employing 3 agricultural labourers. Born Tetcott, Devon, England 25 April 1774.
http://www.familysearch.org lists the above birth date as the Christening date.
John Oliver, became a tenant of "Boyton Mills", Devon, England in 1827 and purchased it in 1842. Where did John live before 1827? What did he do? Did he farm? Where did the Mill skills come from? James was a farmer. Were these learnt in the previous place of abode?
Date of death from headstone in the "Church of the Holy Name Boyton" churchyard and found when Brian of nzolivers visited Devon and Cornwall in April 2008.
A copy of John’s Will dated 29th October 1842 obtained by Brian Oliver of
nzolivers.com (b.1950) on his April 2008 visit to Devon lists the following children:
John, Thomas, Mary, Ann - each to receive ten pounds
James, William, Samuel - each to receive one pound
Francis - to inherit Boyton Mill after John’s wife (Grace) dies.
Brian suspects that James and Samuel received only one pound because they emigrated and perhaps John and Grace helped with payment of their passage? Brian does not know what happened to William. Did he emigrate somewhere?
Brian has many documents to study before completing this section about John Oliver and his children. This includes confirming dates which has more work to be done on.
Peter (Pete) G M Dale of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Pete is related to the Olivers in Devon. Pete's great great great grandfather was John Batten (Battin) b. 1793, sister of Ruth Batten who married James Oliver b.1805. Ruth and James emigrated to New Zealand in 1841.
Pete writes about the 1851 England Census, “Father John, his wife Grace and their adult son John are living in Boyton Mill in Northcott, Devon. John Sr. was born in Tetcott and his son John (b. c. 1802) in Holsworthy. Son Francis (b. c. 1822), a Miller like his father, was born in Pyworthy, Devon and is living beside his parents John, Grace, et al. Thus, it would appear that after the birth of John and Grace’s children in Holsworthy, the family moved to Pyworthy, where ‘our’ Battin family lived, and had at least 2 more children. Ruth Batten and James Oliver most likely met while they both lived in Pyworthy.
A review of ‘Pyworthy Baptisms – 1813-1839’, (2005), DFHS, has the following entries for children of John Oliver and his wife Grace which confirms the 1841 and 1851 Census of England entries above:
• Ann Oliver dau. of John and Grace, Yeoman, from Derril, bap. June 8, 1817;
• Samuel Oliver son of John and Grace, Farmer, from Derril, bap. July 18, 1819; and
• Francis Oliver son of John and Grace, Farmer, from Derril, bap. April 8, 1822.

Image of Auction Notice for Boyton Mill in the 'Cornwall Gazette 30 January 1817' from contributor, Katia, wife of Tim Grant Oliver, in an email dated 12 July 2022. This pre-dates when this John Oliver purchased the Mill in 1832. In the publication, "Historic Building Record Boyton Mill", prepared by Deborah Laing-Trengove of the University of York, page 8 reads, "The mill was left unsold until 1832 when the then tenant, John Oliver, purchased the property. The mill remained in the ownership of the Oliver family until 1897, followed by Thomas [Yeo] and then Frank Yeo, then Jack Cole the last person listed as miller, who sold the mill in 1951 to a Mr Hill who ‘modernised the premises’.
