This is Pete's great great grandfather John Batten b. 1833.
John’s father was John Batten (Battin) b. 1793 and was the sister of Ruth Batten who married James Oliver b.1805. Ruth and James emigrated to New Zealand in 1841.
Pete has carried out extensive research on his Battin/Batten family and writes, "John was a Butcher, Engineer and Farmer. He arrived in Canada in 1850. He resided, initially, in Montreal or Quebec City in Lower Canada working as an Engineer for a period of time".
Pete also writes from the Obituary from the “Startford Beacon” dated May 28, 1906 - page 8:
“Late Mr. John Battin. On Monday May 21st the death occurred of Mr. John Battin. Deceased had been in good health until five weeks before his demise. Deceased was born in Devonshire, England, in 1833, and came to this country in 1850. He resided in Lower Canada for some time. He was then united to his now bereaved partner, Miss Jessie Robertson, in Stratford in 1859. They removed to the 14th concession of Logan when it was but a wilderness, and where by their thrift and industry made for themselves a comfortable home. There were born to them eleven children: Mrs. Golightly and Mrs. Chalmers, Monkton; Mrs. Lindsay and Mrs. Smith of Belfast, N.Y.; Mrs. Wells of Walkerton; Mrs. Dawson, Hamilton; Mrs. Richard, Stratford; and George, James, Draper and Jean at home. Deceased was a generous neighbour, a kind husband and loving father, and will be greatly missed for his kind deeds and sociable manner. The pall bearers at the burial were: George and Wm. Brown, D. and Wm. McPherson, D. Harrison and Alex Campbell. Internment was made in Mitchell Cemetery.
Full date of birth, removal of baptism details, from Pete Dale’s updated family tree as at 3 March 2020.
Pete writes that in circa May n1906 that, “John was initially buried in Mitchell Presbyterian Cemetery, and later moved to Harvey’s Cemetery in West Monkton for reinterment at the request of [wife] Jessie”.
