Information from Cynthia Glover (nee Coleman), whose great-great-grandfather was William Samuel Allen b.1843. (William's sister, Martha Allen, married Charles Oliver, youngest son of James and Ruth Oliver).

1st Earl Stanhope. English general and statesman. Educated at Eton and matriculated at Trinity College, Oxford in May 1688 at the age of fouteen. A full account of his life is given in Cynthia's book, “The Allen Family” and first published in 2005.

Cynthia writes that James and Lucy had seven children:

In Michael Stanhope's 2007 "The History of the Stanhope Family" he writes, “General James Stanhope, became 1st. Earl Stanhope in 1718. The title became extinct upon the death of the 7th. Earl in 1967. The Earls Stanhope bore the subsiduary titles of Viscount Stanhope and Baron Stanhope.With the extinction of the Earldom, these titles passed to the Earl of Harrington”.

From Wikipedia, "James Stanhope, 1st Earl Stanhope PC (c. 1673 – 5 February 1721) was a British statesman and soldier who effectively served as Chief Minister between 1717 and 1721. He is probably best remembered for his service during War of the Spanish Succession. He was also the first British Governor of Minorca, which he had captured from the Spanish, between 1708 and 1711".
