Barbara writes:
Gilbert John was the eldest son of Malcolm McCAUL and Isabella nee Alston McCAUL.
Gilbert was educated at the Glasgow Academy. In 1855 he went to Melbourne, Australia on a sailing ship. He sailed "from the Tail of the Bank of Greenoch, and on to Gouroch," on 2nd October, 1855 on the sailing ship "SeaStar", arriving at St. Kilda, Melbourne on December 31, 1855. It was a fast ship and took only eight weeks. He kept a diary during this voyage, with many water colour sketches. They were becalmed for twelve days.

On his arrival he went to see Uncle Bob [Robert Alston 1818-1858] who was with C.W. & Co. on Collins Street, Melbourne.

Gilbert McCAUL was a Land Auctioneer with Gemmel McCAUL in Melbourne. He sold all the land between the Domain and St. Kilda Junction. In February, 1859 he returned to Glasgow on the SS Norfolk, to marry Margaret Adam Watson. They were married at her home 224 Great Western Road, Glasgow. Witnesses at the marriage included George Frew and Edward Langlands. The marriage took place on 1 March, 1859, and a contract of marriage was signed on 28 February, 1859. Gilbert and his bride returned to Melbourne on the SS Yorkshire, arriving in June 1859. They lived on Grey Street, Melbourne, and then at Garroch House, St. Kilda. Three girls and two boys were born in Melbourne, the two boys died.

On February 16, 1867 he and his first wife & three daughters & one servant sailed from Melbourne to London on the SS Superb, and on to Hillhead, Glasgow. They stayed at 3, Viewfield Terrace, Hillhead, Glasgow, home of Mrs. Edward Langlands, (nee Watson, sister of his wife) where fourth daughter Jane Langlands McCAUL was born on 23August, 1867. His wife Margaret died on 27 August, 1867, and his baby daughter Jane died on September 16, 1867.

There is some reference to "Aunt Bessie" who looked after his children. This may have been Mrs. Edward "Jane" Langlands (maiden surname Watson, and almost certainly the sister of Mrs. Margaret (Watson) McCAUL, his first wife. The children spent quite a lot of time in Stirling, and often at Gouroch with Uncle Robert Watson and his wife.
In 1877 Gilbert John McCAUL married Jessie Cooper, daughter of Robert Cooper of Grove House, Grove Park, Kent, (Cooper Taber & Company, Seed Merchants). They lived at 16 Church Terrace, Lewisham, Kent, although he may have lived at Sydenham first. He moved to Creggandarroch, Yester Road, Chislehurst, Kent, which wasbuilt for him about 1884. The station was Elmstead Woods, a private station built for business men going up to London.

Gilbert and Jessie had six children; the second boy Guy Malcolm, and two daughters Jessie and Norah, died young, and were buried at Hither Green Cemetery. They spent the winters at St. Leonards on Sea, where they had a house. Later this was sold and they stayed at the Victoria Hotel in the winters.

He was a successful businessman and a talented artist . Many of his paintings were done on the continent during holidays there.

The firm of Gilbert J. McCAUL Ltd. was sold. Branches of the company still remain in Australia and New Zealand.
