Sambir on the Dnister River today is part of Western Ukraine. From 1387–1772 it was part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and from 1772–1918 part of the Austrian Empire (1772–1918). It was under Polish rule from 1919 to 1939. After the Second World War Sambir became part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Today Sambir is an industrial and transportation centre. Its factories produce radio parts, instruments, glass, furniture, clothes, and sugar and repair road-building machinery.
