Malcolm McFarlan McCAUL Bapt. 8 Aug 1844 witnesses: John Alston Sr. & William McCAUL
Information from “McCaul Family Scotland” (first compiled in 1991 and updated to 2002) by Marcia Barbara (Barbara) McCaul, Canada (b. 1932, d. 2002). Barbara was the great-great granddaughter of Gilbert McCaul (b. 1765) and Janet McFarlan (b. 1770). Brian of
nzolivers.com is the great-great-great grandson of Gilbert and Janet.
Barbara writes:
Malcolm McFarlan McCAUL, born 25 May 1844, Barony, Glasgow, younger son of Malcolm McCAUL, Cotton & Linen Manufacturer, Glasgow. Leadbeter McCAUL & Co.
res: 1844 Barony, Glasgow
1851 1 Clifton Place, Glasgow
1861 3 Wilton Crescent, Glasgow (age 16)
Sent out to his elder brother Gilbert John McCAUL in Melbourne sometime after 1862. Worked in Australia for some years. Met a Mr. Thompson or Thomson who offered him a job in New Zealand with Thompson, Shannon & Co. of Wellington, N.Z. as Manager of their Wanganui Branch. Drapery Business)
He met and married Elizabeth Annie Cox in 1881. He was 37, she was 21. First two children Enid and Graeme born in Wanganui, others in Wellington. He moved to Wellington about 1883. A set of silver spoons, with inscription on the box: “To .M. McCAUL from his fellow employees Novr. T.S. & Co., W. 1883" [Thomson, Shannon & Co.] (Now in possession of N.Z. descendants.) He also worked for either D.I.C. or Kirkaldies (or both) in Wellington
His wife was a keen bridge player, and liked a very social life, which he did not. Sometime (after 1900) during the depression he left his wife and children in Wellington to go to Australia to seek a better job. He did not return to New Zealand. His two elder children Enid and Graeme helped their mother bring up the younger children. His son George, and possibly Graeme too, visited him (in the 1920's) in Australia.
Two of his books inscribed as follows in possession of N.Z. descendants: "The Days of Auld Lang Syne" 1895 [by Ian MacLaren] inscribed: "Mr. and Mrs. M. McCAUL with best wishes for 1896 Glasgow, 1895." "Kate Carnegie and Those Ministers" 1896 inscribed: "To Uncle Malcolm and Aunt Bessie - With love and best wishes from Malcolm & Edith Brodie, Melbourne, Xmas 1896" Note: Malcolm McCAUL Brodie was the son of Jessie McCAUL who married Robert Brodie in Glasgow.
Malcolm's brother Gilbert John left him a legacy of L50. in his will (1922). Malcolm died in the State Hospital, Liverpool, NSW in 1932 aged 88. Described as an old age pensioner, formerly a warehouseman, on death certificate. He was buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery. Funds for the funeral expenses had been deposited for this purpose. Death certificate states he lived in N.S.W. for 58 yrs*; other states 5 yrs. and married in N.Z. aged 37. [*58 yrs. must be incorrect, but he may have spent some years there, as well as State of Victoria before going to N.Z.] with Malcolm McFarlan MCCAUL

[Interesting to note that a “Clark, M, lived next door at second listing past Lawrence St. Intersects (Today, this is no. 141 Owen Street). Is this Morton Reigels Stow Clark? Is it a coincidence that Malcolm’s son, M Graeme C McCaul (born 1883), married Morton Clark’s daughter, Kathleen Rita Clark (born 1891), in 1920? Graeme would have been about 14 years and Kathleen 6 years. So, they would have definately known each other at this stage].
