Peter Horneman advised Brian of
nzolivers.com in 2/3 May 2017, that Frederick came out to New Zealand with his parents on the barque ‘Slains Castle’. They left Gravesend on the 22nd July 1852 and arrived at Otago on the 9th November 1852, after a good passage of 108 days. They arrived in Nelson on 3rd January 1853.
(Peter Horneman is the great-grandson of Emma Caroline Horneman b. 1836).
Notes, written by Frederick Edward Horneman in his Bible, were received in an email dated 20 May 2017 from Julie Bourke and include:
Our Son Frederick Frank Urwick Horneman was born at No 10 Queens Place Kennington Road on Monday the 21 December 1840 at one o’clock in the morning, in the parish of Lambeth Surrey & was Registered in the said Parish. He was christened at Trinity Church, Newington on the 20th of March 1841 by the Rev.d G. Chestnutt.
His Godfathers’ were:
1. Captain Frank Devis # 1st Regiment Native Infantry Madras.
(I.W.W. Crosthwaite Esqre stood proxy for him.) 2. Richard Urwick Esq of Felhampton Salop
(I.H. Anderson Esq stood proxy for him) His Godmother was
1. Mrs Elizabeth Sophie Wilbraham his aunt (born Devis)
He was named Frederick after his father and Frank and Urwick after his Godfathers.
Richard Urwick died at Overton near Ludlow on the 5 Dec 1869 aged 68 yrs.
#Frank Devis died of Chlorea at Kolopore Southern Mahratta Country Bombay 30 April 1846 where his brother Officers have erected a tomb over him “as a mark of their regard and esteem”. Vide Major Goldsworthy’s letter of 9 October 1846.Note: Frank Devis and Elizabeth Sophia Wilbraham/Devis were brother and sister of Emma Francis.
Salop is Shropshire – Urwicks relatives of Grandmother Jane Horneman/Hammond, mother’s maiden name Urwick.
