Peter Horneman advised Brian of
nzolivers.com in 2/3 May 2017, that Emma out to New Zealand with husband F. E. Horneman and five children on the barque ‘Slains Castle’. They left Gravesend on the 22nd July 1852 and arrived at Otago on the 9th November 1852, after a good passage of 108 days. They arrived in Nelson on 3rd January 1853.
(Peter Horneman is the great-grandson of Emma Caroline Horneman b. 1836).

Julie is the great-great-granddaughter of Emma Frances Devis. Brian of
nzolivers.com is a x3-great grandson of Emma Frances Devis.
Julie Bourke forwarded a document to Brian, in an email dated 7 May 2017, told of Emma’s younger sister, Lavina Susan (Susan) Devis came out to New Zealand on ‘Slains Castle’ in 1852.
Diamond Brooch A diamond brooch that Emma Frances Devis’ father, Henry Devis, bought off very close friend, Sir Christopher Sweedland, and gave to her.
Julie Bourke in an email dated 25 June 2017 writes that in Henry Devis’ Will (very long about 5 to 6 pages) it states, “
To my daughter Emma Francis Devis my diamond brooch which I bought off Sir Christopher Sweedland (after her mother’s decease) also my portrait painted by Arthur William Devis”.
Julie writes that he portrait mentioned, “is still with descendants in America, they had it restored a few years ago”.
In a separate email of the same date (25 June 2017) Julie writes,”it must of been handed down to Lucy [granddaughter of Emma Frances Devis] for it comes up in Lucy’s Will ‘
I give my mother’s Diamond Cross to my said trustees to carry out her instructions regarding its future disposition and possessions’”.
Julie also writes, “descendants of Paulina Fredrerica Louisa Clark [another daughter of Emma’s], who were at the [past family] reunions, knew of it and also referred to it as the Sweedland Cross. They seemed to think it was broken up. Peter [Horneman, great-grandson of Emma Caroline Horneman] had never heard of it”.
