The following information from Peter Horneman in a visit to Peter in Christchurch by Brian of
nzolivers.com in May 2017. Peter is the great-grandson of Emma Caroline Horneman b. 1836.
1. In London Frederick Edward Horneman was a notable amateur oarsman and was ‘Stroke’ for the Leander Club for eight consecutive years.
2. Frederick Edward Horneman was Captain of No. 2 Honourable Artillery Company, London.
3. He out to New Zealand with wife Emma and five children on the barque ‘Slains Castle’. they left Gravesend on the 22nd July 1852 and arrived at Otago on the 9th November 1852, after a good passage of 108 days. They arrived in Nelson on 3rd January 1853
3. A copy of Frederick Edward Horneman’s diary of the voyage to New Zealand has been lodged with with the National Library - Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington
4. Captain Frederick Edward Horneman was appointed ‘Major’ in command of the Nelson District during the Maori War 1860 - 64.
