Brought to New Zealand as a diver to work on the Patent Slip in Evans Bay, Wellington according to Rachel Oliver, great-granddaughter of William here.
The Patent Slip was built in 1873 and was designed to accommodate large ships over land for maintenance and repairs and was considered a great engineering feat.
Rachel also believes William may have worked on the shipwreck of the wooden barque, the “Queen Bee”. A fine, roomy ship, she was one of the earliest vessels to bring immigrants to New Zealand and had made eleven passages from England, when disaster struck on the night of Monday 6 August 1877 when she ran aground on Farewell Spit.
