https://www.aucklandmuseum.com/war-memorial/online...rd/C48948?lang=en-nz Therefore,
who are Bertie’s real parents? The quest for information goes on…
Was Bertie an Illegitimate child of one of Thomas and Hannah's daughters?
Age of Thomas and Hannah's daughters at the time of Bertie’s birth on 12 December 1885Elizabeth Jane Jones was aged 19 yrs 5 months, being born 5 July 1866. (Elizabeth was already married to John Graydon. Married 18 September 1883).
Emma Jones was aged 18yrs 1 month, being born 8 November 1867. (May have married Robert Fraser in 1890 but Brian of nzolivers is sceptical).
Hannah (Annie) Jones was aged 16 1/2 yrs, being born 8 March 1869. (Married 9 1/2 years later to Henry Wharton on 25 May 1895).
Ettie May Jones was aged 3 yrs, being born 18 October 1882. (Later married Edwin John Thomson 08 March 1901
From the above review daughters, two could perhaps be Berties’s mother:
Emma JonesHannah (Annie) JonesAccording to the
Birth Certificate received in June 2025, Bertie was registered as the son of Thomas JONES and Hannah SAMMELS. However, this still not explain why military records state that Hannah [nee Sammels] is his grandmother?

Brian of nzolivers wonders what the last item for added/altered being “91” refers to?
New Zealand BDM Life and Identity Services Officer replys in June 2025:
“
…the 91 depicted in this register entry is the folio number. It is simply a reference to the position of this birth register entry in the paper index, prior to digitisation. I suspect that the folio number was re-written again, to appear clearer. This entry is at the bottom of the page, which indicates why the folio number has been re-written there.
Additionally, because this number refers to an internal method of cataloguing records, it is not related to the personal information provided in this birth printout. As such, it’s unlikely to further your research”.
