Misc. Notes
Name, date of birth and death, from Muriel Leo’s (nee Oliver, 1917-1998) Family Tree.
The children listed are as per Muriel Oliver’s work.
A separate typed Family Tree (source unknown) shows a daughter (fifth born) Elizabeth, 23 Dec 1859 to 21 Jul 1927. It does not include Kate below, 27 Jun 1873 to 1964.
Graeme Kenyon, whose great grandfather was James George Kenyon b.1861 (whose second wife was Ada Oliver b.1864, daughter of Samuel Oliver b.1833) quotes the Taranaki Herald of 9 August 1899:
“During the war he [John Oliver] served with the Taranaki Militia, and since the sessation of hostilities has continued to reside at Omata…”.
Graeme writes, “John Oliver applied for a New Zealand medal based on service in the Taranaki Militia and being under fire at the battle of Waireka [
28 March 1860]. His application was rejected (Stowers 2012). The reason was not given by Stowers; possibly he was not actually under fire on the day of that skirmish”.
