Richard is great-grandson of Francis Oliver b.1840 through his daughter Alice Bertha Oliver.
Matthew came out to New Zealand with younger brother Charles in 1875 on the “Collingwood”. They arrived in New Plymouth on the 5th August 1875, after a very trying voyage out from England. Matthew was 27 and listed as a carpenter.
On the 27th August just two weeks later, the “Halcione” arrived with more immigrants, one being Charlotte Chatterton, also from Lincolnshire. It was not long before Matthew married Charlotte. They chose to go farming and settled on a farm on the corner of Maud and Hill Roads. Their farm being opposite Matthew's sister Mehetabel Leary and her husband Elijah who were also farming. Matthew and Charlotte's interests revolved around their church activities mostly. They brought up a family of six daughters and one son.
Charlotte died early in life on the 23rd September 1900 aged 48 years. Matthew sold the farm one year later and moved to Gover Street, New Plymouth, where he went into business in a grocer's shop. He married Elizabeth Bryden who was known as Mater to the family. There were no children.
Matthew died on the 12th December 1917 at the age of 70 years. He is buried at the Te Henui cemetery with both his wives - Plot 9/112
