Thomas Dodson, who came out on the Nelson Expedition ship, "Will Watch," in 1841, lived at the top of the valley. His wife and family came out on the "Lloyds". Thomas Dodson was a well known figure in the community being a member of the Nelson Provincial Council, the Suburban North Road Board, the Suburban North Committee of Education, and other bodies.
In 1854 his brother, Joseph Reid Dodson, came out to New Zealand and within a few days of his arrival at Nelson he went into partnership with the brewer, G. Hooper, trading under the name of Hooper & Co. J. R. Dodson later became Nelson's first Mayor.

OBITUARY
Star (New Zealand) 2 September 1898
AN OLD SETTLER - Another of the now fast disappearing band of "Expedition" men died at Nelson a few days ago. Thomas Dodson, of Wakapuaka, who died in his ninety-second  year, landed in Nelson (The "Mail" states) in November 1841, from the barque "Will Watch", one of the three vessels forming the expedition sent from England by the New Zealand company, under the command of Captain Wakefield, for the purpose of founding the Nelson settlement. Mr Dodson was one of the first members of the Loyal Nelson Lodge of Oddfellows, and in later years he occupied a seat in the Provincial Council. For a long time past he resided at Wakapuaka where a valley bears his name, and until lately, enjoyed good health in spite of his advanced years. His death was due to an attack of bronchitis following influenza.

Personal.— Obituary. One of the Colony's oldest settlers, in the person of Mr Thomas Reid Dodson, has passed away at Whakapuaka, Nelson. Deceased was one of the few remaining "Expedition men" of Nelson, who came out in the “Will Watch." He was the eldest brother of the late Mr Henry Dodson, who represented the Wairau in the House of Representatives, and of Mr George Dodson, of Spring Creek. Closely associated, as he was, with the earliest history of the Colony, his career is full of, pioneering interest. He dies at the ripe old age of 91 years, regretted by many friends.
[Mary Simpson is descendant from Thomas’ brother, George Dodson].
