Parents of Elizabeth Ann Langman being Richard Langman and Mary Rogers questioned by Graeme Kenyon in an email dated 15 September 2020. Graeme writes that:
1. The obituary for Richard Langman makes no mention of a daughter Elizabeth Ann Langman
2. The passenger list for the William Bryan shows Richard and Mary Langman came with three sons - Richard, Thomas and John. Elizabeth Ann Langman who was born in Cornwall in 1841, is not on the list.

(Graeme’s great grandfather was James George Kenyon b.1861 whose second wife was Ada Oliver b.1864, daughter of Samuel Oliver b.1833. Also, James’ sister, Florence Kenyon, married James William Oliver, son of Charles Oliver b.1843).

Brian of nzolivers requested the marriage certificate for Elizabeth Ann Langman and Francis Oliver, and received on 18 September 2020. However, this did not list Elizabeth’s parents.

However, this marriage certificate to Francis did show the place of wedding was at “House of James Oliver Powderham Street” in New Plymouth. Francis aged 26 and Elizabeth aged 24. Occupation of Francis is “Farmer”. Witnesses were Francis’ brother and sister: Charles Oliver and Matilda Oliver.

Graeme Kenyon in an email dated 22 September 2020 wrote:
“One little detail of interest regarding the Reid Oliver marriage certificate you purchased – I noticed the officiating minister was Rev. Whitely”.
“As I am sure you know, he was murdered three years later at Whitecliffs by a Maori war party from Mokau led by Hone Wetere Takerei Te Rerenga”.
“They completely wiped put the garrison there, children included – then Rev Whitely came trotting along and insisted on coming to have a look – so they shot him too….”
“Who would have known on that happy day, that their Minister had only three years to live”?

In an email dated 21 September 2020, Graeme Kenyon wonders, Where, did this Elizabeth Ann (Langman) (Reid) (Oliver) come from”.
“We need now to look at the Langman family of Nelson. There was plenty of to-ing and fro-ing between New Plymouth and Nelson in those days. Francis Oliver might have picked up a Langman from Nelson”.
“Ah!! I have just discovered that the Nelson and New Plymouth Langman families were related”.
“I have just discovered the WILL of Richard Langman Snr of Taranaki…where he has a nephew called Richard Langman of Nelson, referred to in the will”:

In a later email from Graeme Kenyon dated 29 September 2020, he ponders:
- Richard Langman (NP) has a nephew in Nelson in 1891, named Richard.
- Richard Langman of Dovedale [west of Nelson] is the right age, and from Cornwall.
- Could the Dovedale Richard Langman and Elizabeth Ann be siblings?

In this email of 29 September 2020, Graeme includes an newspaper clipping listing the passengers on the ‘DUKE OF PORTLAND’, a ship of 533 tons, that arrived in Auckland 5 July 1855. It includes the names:
“…Richard Longman, Eliza Longman…”
Graeme writes, “Could this be Richard and Elizabeth Ann (Langman spelled Longman) arriving in New Zealand, (they are not Mr and Mrs so must be siblings)”?
“Perhaps following the New Plymouth Langmans from Cornwall, Richard to establish later in Dovedale [west of Nelson] and Elizabeth to marry Reid [and then Francis Oliver] in New Plymouth.

In a further quest to determine the parents of Elizabeth Ann Langman, Brian ordered her death certificate, now known as Elizabeth Ann Oliver. This was received on 7 October 2020. This showed her parent’s as:
Father: Thomas Longman
Mother: Elizabeth Langman (nee Rowe)
This now confirms that Elizabeth Ann Langman’s parents are not Richard and Mary (nee Rogers) Langman as originally thought.

Other information of the death certificate has her age as “73 years”, profession of father was “Labourer”, born in Cornwall England, been in New Zealand 60 years. Children living at time of death - four males age 44, 41, 35, 28 years and four daughters age 46, 42, 36, 30 years.

Looking at being in New Zealand 60 years, this would place her immigrating circa 1856, which matches Graeme Kenyon’s thinking that she arrived on the “Duke of Portland’ on 5 July 1855.

Place of marriage, year of birth roughly matches calculated circa 1842 (calculated from being aged 15 at time of marriage), from Graeme Kenyon in an email dated 7 October 2020 - sourced from the Marriage Certificate for Patrick Reid and Elizabeth Ann Langman.
One of the witnesses is “Richard Langman” which would be Elizabeth’s brother.

Graeme Kenyon in an email dated 9 October 2020 writes, “I am 99% convinced now that Elizabeth Ann (Langman) (Reid) Oliver is a niece of New Plymouth Richard Langman Snr”
“Also that Richard Langman of Dovedale is her brother”.
“They are both the children of Thomas Hender Langman – brother of Richard Senior”.

Date of birth of “4 February 1843” and place of birth of “Helman Tor, Lanlivery, Cornwall, England” from Peter Goss in an email dated 26 January 2021 that included a copy of the birth Certifcate.
Peter Goss is the x2 great grandson of this Elizabeth Ann Langman, and is the eldest son of Elfrida Ruth Geddes.
