A Family Plot at Waikaraka Cemetery
The above Plot 019 at Waikaraka Cemetery, Onehunga, Auckland, is the right-hand side of a family plot consisting of Plots No. 13 and 19. (The Plot numbering system in the row is rather strange, each plot number incrementally going up by 6).
John Jones, the husband of this Grace Jone (nee McGregor), is buried with Grace in the same Plot 019 It was a mystery as to whom is buried in the left-hand side of this family plot, no. 13?
Extensive research in May 2025 by Brian of nzolivers, has found that “Elizabeth Jane Lennard (née Bartlett)”, is in that Plot 13. Elizabeth was born a “Bartlett”, being the daughter of George Henry Bartlett and Mary Jane McDowell. Elizabeth is a first cousin of our Grace Jones (nee McGregor), each sharing the same grandparents of George Bartlett and Frances Elizabeth Bartlett (nee Lawrence).
Elizabeth’s father and this Grace’s mother, Catherine Jane McGregor (nee Bartlett) were brother and sister.
Proposition:
How did Grace become buried here?
Elizabeth Jane Lennard (née Bartlett) died young in 1906, aged 27. According to Auckland Council records, her half-brother, Frederick Bartlett at age 32, purchased the two adjacent plots (013 and 019) at Waikaraka Cemetery. The second plot (019) probably intended for Elizabeth's husband, Charles Thaxter Lennard.
Interesting that her husband 'Charles Thaxter Lennard' did not make the purchase. Perhaps he was too devastated at the time and half-brother, Frederick was executor of her affairs, and handled the transaction?
However, Charles was never to be buried with Elizabeth. He later remarried, to Lily Trembath. And, when he passed away in 1936, Charles was instead buried at Māngere Lawn Cemetery, Auckland. A couple of years later Lily married John Hunter. Upon Lily's death in 1957, she was buried at Waikumete Cemetery. Her husband died many years later, in 1971, and although also buried in Waikumete Cemetery, was interned in the 'Service Persons Ash Burial Area K'.
So, with Elizabeth's husband John being buried elsewhere in 1936, Plot 019 was remaining empty!
Then, 11 years later, comes the death of cousin Grace Jones (nee McGregor and daughter of Catherine Jane Bartlett). Frederick Bartlett was still alive and along with other Bartlett family members, must have allowed Grace to be buried there. Eight years on, Grace’s husband, John Jones, passed away and was buried with her in Plot 019.
Later, in 1973, Elizabeth's son, Charles Thaxter LENNARD (same name as father) was buried in nearby Plot 008.
Of note, Frederick Bartlett is also buried nearby Plot 002, along with his wife and two of his children.
