Graeme Kenyon quotes a note compiled on the occasion of the Diamond Wedding Anniversary of Edith Adelaide Kenyon and John Wilson and quote here James George Kenyon was born in Picton, where his mother had been sent during the Taranaki Maori Wars.

PLEASE NOTE: In a subsequent email dated 26 July 2021, Graeme writes that James George Kenyon WAS NOT born in Picton but, “in Lower Wairau (Blenheim)”.
Graeme writes that James George Kenyon’s mother [Ellen] went first to Nelson and was among the last of the Taranaki wives to depart due to the first Taranaki war. In the passenger list from the Nelson Examiner and New Zealand Chronicle dated 12th December 1860, it is written, "Nov. 8... Kenyon, wife and family".
Graeme writes, "The family referred to is just her and her son Joe Willah Kenyon about 1 year old. It is not clear if her husband [John Kenyon] was with her, from wording of above news clip I am inclined to believe not. She was pregnant with James George Kenyon at the time".
Graeme writes, "One month after arriving in Nelson, she and baby Joe Willah made a coastal passage where the destination of the vessel was Picton and Wairau (Blenheim)". In the same Nelson Examiner and New Zealand Chronicle dated 12th December 1860, it is written, "December 7, schooner Mary, 40, McClean, for Picton and Blenheim. Passengers:... Mrs Kenyon and child..."
Graeme writes, "James George was born in Lower Wairau (Blenheim)", as per a birth notice published in the Marlborough Press of 2nd February 1861, "BIRTH. At Lower Wairau, on the 28th January, the wife of Mr John Kenyon, Carpenter, of Taranaki, of a son".
Graeme writes, "the complete family (mother, father, two children) then travelled back to New Plymouth in 1862". In the Taranaki Herald of 29th March 1862, "Shipping Intelligence: ARRIVED...Mr and Mrs Kenyon and family..."
Graeme writes, "In 1864 the Eldest child (Joe Willah) died in New Plymouth about 5 years old. James George, now about 3 years old, survived".
