Misc. Notes
Name from Dax Eric Clayton Lloyd, great-grandson of Jessie Bertha Oliver b.1876.
Date and place of birth from Graeme Kenyon, whose great grandfather was James George Kenyon b.1861 whose second wife was Ada Oliver b.1864, daughter of Samuel Oliver b.1833.
Date of birth is recorded on the flyleaf of an old family bible which John Kenyon brought with him to New Zealand as a young man.
Graeme writes that John Kenyon, “was the third and youngest child of Joseph Kenyon”.
Graeme continues that is almost certain that John’s father, Joseph Kenyon, “had been previously married and by his first wife (at present unknown) his first two children, Thomas and Sarah Ann were born. It is my belief that Joseph Kenyon then moved to Halifax, married Hannah Willah (Willey) and then my ancestor John was born. It is thus my belief that John’s two elder siblings, Thomas and Sarah Ann, are half-siblings”.
Graeme writes, “John and Thomas Kenyon arrived in New Plymouth in December 1855, via Auckland, on the ship Carnatic. John was single, Thomas [half-brother] had a wife in Halifax”.
“A year or so later the rest of the family arrived on the ship Euphemus.
The rest of the family being:
- the parents Joseph and Hannah,
- the sister Sarah Ann,
- Thomas’ wife Elizabeth Kenyon (nee Town)
- and her two boys James and John Town.
(It is not clear whether Thomas was actually the father of James and John, probably not, though after arrival in New Zealand they were known as James and John Kenyon)”.
“John Kenyon, who came out to New Plymouth as a single young man, was carpenter and that was how he made his living until some years later when he took up some land in New Plymouth and became a farmer”.
