Graeme writes, “Ellen Ward had come to New Zealand in 1842 as a baby, on the Timandra. The Ward family had arrived in New Plymouth a few months after the Olivers. Ellen Ward grew up in New Plymouth. There are still Ward descendants living in New Plymouth and there are members of the Ward family who have pretty good family information going back at least one generation before the arrival of the Wards in New Plymouth. Ellen’s father was James Ward who was a cooper. The family came from Bridport, Devon in the South of England. Ellen’s brother Joe continued the cooperage trade in New Plymouth and was quite a well-known identity”.
